What Makes A Good Mahjong Set?
The best part of Mahjong is you can buy ONE SET for pretty cheap, and you’re set for life (if you take care of it)! You can play almost any style, any way you like, for a long, long time with one set of Mahjong tiles.
On top of that, it’s pretty cheap to get started. I saw a Mahjong Set, albeit manufactured for American Mahjong, at Target for less than $30! You can also find small to extra-large tiles on Amazon easily for around $45 to $60!
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “That’s expensive!” and I would say, “Maybe!”, but in the long run– for what these tiles offer– it’s honestly a small price to pay!
Again, most of these tiles are built from thick, strong acrylic! It’s really hard to break, shatter, or crack these tiles unless you’re trying to do so. And as long as you have a table, you have a game you can play over and over for years to come!
But what if you wanted to spice things up a little bit? Maybe you’re hosting Mahjong Night at your home or asked to bring a set to the club. You might want to wow your guests or maybe flex just a little bit on the club members with your special Mahjong set! While you might not have the deep pockets for some of these sets, you can, for sure, keep them in the back of your mind when someone asks about showstopping Mahjong Sets!!
World of Warcraft Mahjong Set

Here’s a REAL treat!
Back in 2013, with the Mists of Pandaria Expansion coming out, Mainland China was getting EXTRA care with this NetEase Collaboration Mists of Pandaria Chinese Mahjong Set!
At the time, this whole set, which included 144 tiles, a huge playing cloth, chips, dice, rulers, and a special storage case, ran an average Chinese Citizen 1,288RMB, or around $200 USD (as of 2013)
It sold out FAST, mostly because there was a select lottery to buy the set rather than letting anyone grab one!
Today, you COULD find this set on eBay if you’re very lucky, but it’s going to run you anywhere up to $600 to $700 USD! This is a great gift for any Mahjong and World of Warcraft lover, and with its scarlet-red tile backs, it’s a beauty to behold indeed.
This set is curated for Chinese Mahjong only!
A24 Everything, Everywhere All At Once Mahjong Set

With artwork by Manshen Lo, the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” Mahjong Tile set is a mystical and perplexing dance of bright reds, blinding whites, and pops of color on a jet-black tile, complete with the A24 company logo on the back!
For the low, low price of $320 USD (I’m being facetious), you can wow your guests with this high-quality piece of artwork disguised as a game.

I’m more tempted, after seeing the wonderful prints on the tiles, to display them rather than scuff, bump, and slam them down to play! They look too pretty to throw around!
As of this writing, the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” Mahjong tile set will be released and shipped on July 30th, 2026.
This set is curated for Chinese and Taiwanese Mahjong.
Louis Vuitton Mahjong Set

You will NEVER touch this set in your life, I can PROMISE you that, unless you win the Powerball Mega Millions!
The Louis Vuitton Vanity Mahjong Set is a whopping $62,000 USD and features 144 tiles, a massive leather trunk with six drawers, rulers, and dice. You would think, for that price, which is more than my car, you would also get a mat, but no dice there.
However, for this massive price tag, you would also expect a quality tile set, in lieu of the mat, maybe. And for that, you would be 100% right!

Made with Corian (which is just a fancy acrylic) and Mahogany Wood, you can be sure you'll feel richer than anyone you know (you more than likely already are if you can afford this). The rulers are also cut from the same wood, with an embossed gold “LV” monogram on the back of the tiles.
The tiles themselves have a massive pop of color on the front; vibrant reds, brilliant greens, and stunning yellows make the primary colors look like they’ll pop off the tiles any moment!
You paid a high price for this set, but spare no expense; it would be so worth it to play one round with these tiles!
These tiles are curated for Chinese Mahjong.
Washizu Mahjong Set

Nobuyuki Fukumoto is a genius. Not only did he somehow make ONE Mahjong match in his manga last 20 whole years, but he also invented Washizu Mahjong!
Washizu Mahjong is a style of Riichi Mahjong in which three sets of a 4-tile suit are transparent, while the final tile of that suit and number is opaque. This creates a massive jump in tension, knowing full well what your opponent's hand COULD be, while your opponent also speculates about your wide-open hand as well!
With 102 transparent tiles and 34 opaque tiles, defense is your biggest ally. If you’re someone who loves to push your hand and go for Riichi as fast as possible, this game style might humble you a little bit.
You can easily find a Washizu Mahjong set on eBay for up to $200 USD, but if you do get your hands on it and bring it to your club, do NOT do a blood wager!!
This Mahjong set is curated for Riichi Mahjong.
Gucci Mahjong Set

I came across this set by pure chance while scrolling through eBay! While $900 is nothing to scoff at, it sure as heck beats a $62,000 Louis Vuitton set!
The Gucci Mahjong set is kind of an enigma. It features Riichi Sticks while NOT providing akadora, or Red 5 tiles. The carrying case is a brilliant red, which is standard for Gucci branding, and features four bone-white dice!
I’ll admit, it’s very pretty. I kind of want to hold them. This might be hard to do, however, since only 100 sets were made for the distribution of The Year of the Fire Horse. It looks like it was released near the Lunar New Year, and I only found two sellers offering up to $900 per set!

AMOS Numbers Set

The “creme de la creme” if you can’t read the Characters yet, or you have a club starting up and need to teach people how to play Riichi Mahjong very, VERY quickly!
The AMOS Numbers Set, sold exclusively through the Mahjong Stars website, provides EVERYTHING you need to get a Riichi mahjong game going, or to teach a Riichi mahjong class! You don’t just receive the tiles, which are very nice with a yellow backing, but you receive a Junk Mat to play on, scoring sticks, a Riichi compass, dice, a wind indicator, and a MASSIVE bag to hold everything together!
The tiles all come in velvet-like sleeves that make storing feel very premium, and the akadora are VERY vibrant and give you a hit of dopamine when you pull them from the wall!
The only gripe I have about them is that the Sou tiles (Bamboo Tiles) and Green Dragon are NOT very green, if at all. They’re more black than green, which would make a Yakuman like “All Green” or “Ryuuiisou” look a little dull. However, this set is so nice, I can look past all of this.

You can more than likely tell by the way I’m writing that I OWN this set, which you would be right! The AMOS Numbers Set is a fan favorite in my household! The tiles are very easy to shuffle, giving a very “sparrow”- like sound, easy to stack and move, and discarding feels very tactile and professional!
This set will run you around $200 USD, but you’ll be pleased to know that Mahjong Stars offers Free Shipping!!
I highly recommend this set for playing Riichi Mahjong, even if you do know what the Manzu and Winds mean!
This set is curated for Riichi Mahjong only!
So, What To Buy?
NOT the Louis Vuitton set, that’s for sure!
Honestly, find the style you like and make a simple decision. All of the sets here are very beautiful and would be lovely to display, but if you’re gathering to play mahjong, I promise you, your guests are looking forward to spending time with you and making a good memory, not gawking over the $1000 Mahjong set you got!
Always remember, you can have fun with a $30 set AND the $62,000 set, they’re the same tiles at the end of the day! What's important is that you have family and friends to play with!
